Alternative investments are ones that stray from the more traditional investments in the fixed income, stock and futures worlds. Examples of alternative investment strategies include long-short equity, event-driven contracts, emissions-related contracts, statistical arbitrage, fixed-income arbitrage, convertible arbritage, short bias, global macro, and Equity Market Neutral.
