Rajnikant Patel was the managing director & CEO and board member of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) in India.[1][2] He spearheaded BSE’s corporatisation and demutualisation. Under his stewardship, BSE received the ICAI Award for 'Best Financial Reporting' – 2006 and 2007; and the 'Golden Peacock Global Award for Corporate Social Responsibility in Financial Services - 2007.'

Patel also launched new products overseas, such as futures based on the BSE's benchmark Sensex index, which trade on the US Futures Exchange.

On Aug. 8, 2008, Patel resigned amid a reported management shakeout at the BSE. Mahesh Soneji, chief operating officer, was designated as the caretaker manager of the exchange until Patel could be replaced.[3]

Patel is a member of the Working Committee of World Federation of Exchanges (WFE); chairman of South Asian Federation of Exchanges (SAFE); member of various committees in Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI); National Council on Corporate Governance & Regulatory Framework of Confederation of Indian Industries (CII); Council on Corporate Governance, Indian Merchant Chambers (IMC). He is a director on the boards of Central Depositories Services (India) Ltd. (CDSL), BOI Shareholding Ltd. (BOISL), Indian Clearing Corporation Ltd. (ICCL), National Multi-Commodity Exchange (NMCE) and Calcutta Stock Exchange Ltd.

Patel was selected for the award of “Distinguished Fellow” by Institute Of Directors in January 2007 and honoured with the “India Super Achiever Award” in December 2005.[4]

In 2001, Patel was appointed director - inspection & surveillance by the BSE following an inquiry which resulted in his predecessor being asked to leave the exchange.[5][6]

Patel had a long stint with the banking regulator Reserve Bank of India. He had previously worked with public sector banks and multi-national banks, including BNP Paribas.[7][8]
