Robert K. Wilmouth
The late Robert K. Wilmouth was the founding president and CEO of the National Futures Association. He served as NFA president and CEO from the NFA's inception in 1982 to 2003 and then as NFA Special Policy Advisor from 2003 to 2008.
Before joining NFA, Wilmouth was president and chief executive officer of the Chicago Board of Trade for approximately five years. Wilmouth's futures industry career was preceded by some 27 years in banking, beginning in 1950 at the first National Bank of Chicago. He became manager of First National's branch in Milan, Italy in 1968 and later general manager of all European Operations. He returned to the U.S. as head of the international banking department and was elected executive vice president of First National in 1972 and named to the bank's board in 1973.
When Wilmouth was named president of the CBOT, he said he expected the exchange to be listing energy contracts soon. The 30-year U.S. Treasury Bond futures were introduced three months before Wilmouth joined the exchange. During his tenure, the CBOT expanded its building and added a new trading floor for its grain pits.
In 1975, he became president of the Crocker National Bank of San Francisco. He was also chairman of LaSalle National Bank for more than two decades. He joined the futures industry in 1977, but continued to serve the banking industry in various capacities. Wilmouth lost out a four-man race to be the head of First Chicago.
Wilmouth served as the chair of the LaSalle Street Dinner for the Chicago Area Council of Boy Scouts of America in 1994.
Wilmouth chaired the Consultative Committee of the International Organization of Securities Commissions, was a Lifetime Trustee of the University of Notre Dame and former chairman of its Investment Committee, and was a member of the Economic Club of Chicago. He also sat on the Advisory Council of Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
Wilmouth is a graduate of Holy Cross College and holds a Masters degree and an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame.
